Saving energy with better lighting choices
Did you know that approximately 10% of your energy budget is spent on lighting? By switching to energy efficient lighting, you may quickly see your bills decrease.
For indoor lighting your choices are many. Although they may cost more initially, in the long run you will save since their energy usage is much less than traditional bulbs.
Halogen, or incandescent lighting is approximately 25% more energy efficient and may last 3 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
CFL bulbs use about one quarter the energy of traditional incandescent bulbs and last about 10 times longer. CFL bulbs contain a very small amount of mercury and need to be handled carefully if they are broken.
LED bulbs, which offer a similar light to the traditional incandescent bulb, but last 25 times as long and use even less energy than CFL's. They can be used in many areas of your home or office such as recessed lights, table lamps, under cabinet lights and outdoors.
Another great tip for saving energy: Use timers, dimmers, and motion detectors wherever possible. Why pay for lights to be on when you aren't using them?
